Of the many pirate attacks suffered by Alcossebre, one raid in the mid-16th century was particularly violent, as the pirates landed at Alcossebre, came inland Alcalà and attacked the town, burning down the gates and reaching the main square. Only the heroic resistance of the townsfolk enabled them to beat back the enemy.

To commemorate this event, a stone was placed outside the San Juan gate. In the late 19th century this plaque was transferred to the corner of one of the houses in the vicinity. The legend engraved on the stone is as follows: "On 17 November 1547, the day of the Saints Acisclo and Victoria, 500 Moors attacked this town, combating for through the intercession of these Saints were we freed from their wrath, and they angrily fled to their fleet of galleys and galliots without prize".
